Shiatsu
Japanese finger pressure therapy to balance energy and promote natural healing
What is Shiatsu?
Shiatsu (meaning "finger pressure" in Japanese) is a traditional Japanese therapy that evolved from ancient Chinese healing practices. It uses rhythmic pressure applied with thumbs, fingers, and palms along the body's meridian lines to restore energy balance and promote the body's natural healing abilities.
Unlike Swedish massage which focuses on muscles, Shiatsu addresses the whole person—body, mind, and spirit—through the concept of Ki (life energy, similar to Chinese "Qi"). Practitioners assess and treat energy imbalances that may manifest as physical or emotional symptoms.
Key Principles of Shiatsu
- Ki (energy) - Life force flowing through meridian channels
- Meridians - 12 primary energy pathways connecting organs and body areas
- Tsubo - Pressure points along meridians (similar to acupuncture points)
- Kyo and Jitsu - Concepts of energy deficiency and excess
- Hara - The abdominal centre, often assessed for diagnosis
Shiatsu Techniques
- Perpendicular pressure - Direct pressure into the body using body weight
- Thumb and finger pressure - Precise work on acupressure points
- Palm pressure - Broader, dispersing pressure
- Stretching - Gentle stretches to open meridian pathways
- Joint rotations - Mobilising to improve energy flow
- Holding - Sustained pressure to tonify or sedate points
